Jewel of the Caspian Sea
Aqtau did not begin it's existence until 1963. I was originally built as a "Soviet Model" of how cities should be built. It has wide, straight streets and sandy beaches. It was called Shevkenko for awhile because of a poet who was exiled there as a political prisoner. Aqtau means "white mountain" in Kazak, so named after the vast, flat steppes surrounding the city! It has become somewhat of a tourist location because of it's location along the Caspian Sea. Just don't plan on taking a bath while you are there as the water comes out of the tap brown.

Kazakhstan is important to world energy markets because it contains significant oil and gas reserves. In particular, the Tengiz oil field alone is estimated to contain between 6 and 9 billion barrels of proven oil reserves.
Mangistau nuclear complex will regularly provide population with water
It is especially important for the Mangistau region, as a year ago water was supplied to the local population according to the schedule, and there was no hot water at all. Thanks to the concluded agreement, the region will be regularly provided with hot and cold water. The Minister expected that as the production of water, electricity and heat became cheaper, the retail tariffs for the population would be kept at the same level.

CITY OF AKTAU). MOST OF KAZAKHSTAN'S POWER
GENERATION PLANTS ARE OBSOLETE AND NEED TO BE
REPLACED OR UPGRADED. NINETY-FOUR PERCENT OF GAS
TURBINES, 57 PERCENT OF STEAM TURBINES, AND 33
PERCENT OF STEAM BOILERS HAVE BEEN IN USE FOR 20
YEARS OR MORE. ALTHOUGH THIS EQUIPMENT NEEDS TO BE
UPGRADED OR REPLACED, KAZAKHSTAN'S PAYMENT CRISIS
WILL LIMIT IMMEDIATE LARGE-SCALE IMPORTS OF U.S.
PRODUCTS.

Port city of Aktau: Useful Contact Information
On October 18-19, 1998, BISNIS Representative in Kazakhstan, Nataliy Antonenko, visited the port city of Aktau in western Kazakhstan and met with managers of local enterprises and government officials. She used the meeting to promote BISNIS=s Search for Partners (SFP) and Trades & Tenders (T&T) programs and collected information on trade and investment opportunities in the city.
